It's Monday! What's Happened?

Life has been busy I'll admit but that's no excuse for my slacking reading. I haven't had an It's Monday post in a while either. So actually I do have a little to update... still my reading progress is sad. I was thinking recently about how my Classics Club challenge finishes up in 2019 on my 25th birthday and I'm only a little over halfway through it. I started out strong the first couple years and I've really slacked off since then only getting a few in every year. I'm not sure what's going to happen there but I'd really like to finish it in the time I designated but most importantly I just want to finish it to say I did it. There are lots of books I'm excited about reading still left on the list. Forget my other reading challenges... I've even more woefully behind one them than my Classics Club challenge. Oh well.
Truth is, with getting married, managing a household and now a baby on the way my life is legitimately more busy than it used to be. I have a nursing license that will need to be renewed soon, a social life I pretend to keep up and did I mention that I'm pregnant.... that's exhausting by itself. Oftentimes I just want to lay down and shut my eyes... not lay down and read a book.
Ah excuses. I have lots of them. My goal right now is to take care of my legitimate excuses first and then brush aside my not so legitimate excuses and take the time to read some more.
With that in mind... here's what's been going on in my reading life of late.

Currently Reading

  • The Once and Future King by T.H. White
  • Let Me Be a Woman by Elisabeth Elliot
  • Total Truth by Nancy Pearcey
  • The Mortification of Sin by John Owen
  • A Tale of Two Cities by Charle Dickens (audiobook) (re-read)
  • God Is by Mark Jones

Finished in the past couple months

  • Lila by Marilynne Robinson
  • The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin
  • Dear Mr. Knightley by Katherine Reay- See my review HERE.
I don't want to start anything new until I shave a couple books off of my currently reading list.... I have a terrible habit of reading far too many books at the same time. To be fair though Let Me Be a Woman I'm reading with my mentor so the progress is slower and God Is is a devotional that Brian and I are doing together so naturally it will be slower.
So here's hoping my reading picks up like I dream it will!

  1. I read Lila recently. I took awhile to get into it (its first of the author's books even though I know its "out of order" but I'm not sure that matters), and then at the end I was reading in a brain fog after extending my eating hours too far apart, but overall I was more impressed than I guess I expected? I didn't realize she'd won a Pulitzer either for Gilead (on my literal tbr shelf). I usually avoid modern writers because they are a dime a dozen. The author has more talent to be a classic author.

I read Dear Mr. Knightley a couple years ago. I hadn't read Daddy Long-Legs and didn't realized how it sponged from it. I enjoyed it until the end. Which was incredibly pathetic. When I picked up Daddy-Long Legs I felt tricked about Reahy's book which I didn't know was such a copy. The original is SO much better especially as the ending is satisfactory.

I just pretty much gave up on my Classics Club challenge. This is my last year, and I just don't read well from such a concrete list. I still want to read some or most of the books, but I read better from a possibility rather than a prescribed list.

I kind of need to have several books going at once. Although not too many. I need to have something easy to help me through the more dense or slower novels or nonfiction.

  2. Lovely photo of you and Brian. There has been so much change in your life recently I am amazed you have time for reading at all! Take it easy, but I hope you manage to continue some reading and blogging.

  3. Don't let reading become a chore! Right now, choosing a nap over a book can be a very good choice. Lord willing, when your baby is here, you'll learn to read and nurse at the same time when I did, and you'll chow through your TBR piles and lists.

  4. Reading far too many books at the same time is a terrible habit? In my case, I wouldn't call that a habit but a lifestyle.

  5. My time is up for my Classics Club in less than a year, and I still have way too many books to go. I'm trying to decide how guilty I'll feel when I miss the deadline - but since it's a self-imposed deadline, who cares? :) I'm so glad you're reading The Once and Future King. It's so good!

Take care of yourself now. Naps are good. :) Once the baby comes, you will have hours a day where you're "stuck" sitting and nursing. Perfect reading time!
