Top Ten Books I Want my Future Children to Read

I haven't done a Top Ten Tuesday in a long time partly because the themes haven't appealed to me and partly because I've just been lazy. However the theme of the top ten books I want my future children to read especially appealed to me with expecting our first children. I love books, my husband loves books so I'm pretty sure we're going to bring up some book lovers. The books I've listed are ones that I loved as a kid and are quality books.  I didn't include any picture books or older level books but stuck with more grade school books. Of course it was hard to narrow down to just ten books so sacrifices had to be made.

  1. The Mad Scientist Club by Bertrand Brinley
  2. Detectives in Togas Henry Winterfield
  3. Freddy Goes to Florida by Walter R. Brooks
  4. Redwall by Brian Jacques
  5. Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder
  6. Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery
  7. Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne
  8. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
  9. The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
  10. The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster

Top Ten Books You Can't Help But Read in One Sitting

The theme for this week's Top Ten Tuesday over at Broke and Bookish is a Read In One Sitting Theme: ten of the shortest books I've read, top ten books I read in one sitting, ten books to read when you are short on time, top ten books that will make you read the whole day away, etc.
So I'm going with my top ten books I can't help but read in one sitting or I did read in one sitting.

  1. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling- One of her only books you can read in one sitting
  2. The Two Towers by J.R.R. Tolkien- Yes I've read this in basically one sitting. Traditionally when I'm re-reading the trilogy I read The Two Towers the fastest... I read it in two days once. So technically two sittings but that's not bad for LOTR.
  3. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum- I read it in like two hours just last month. I had to get it done for book club and while I was pretty sure I could go off of memory from my previous re-reads I didn't want to risk it.
  4. Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee- I read this one in two hours too.
  5. A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket- I'm working through the series right now but each time I pick up one of the books it's less than two hours and I'm done. They're quick and fun reads.
  6. The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis- Or any of them in the series. They're quick, fun and easy to read. Especially The Horse and His Boy obviously!
  7. Mara, Daughter of the Nile by Eloise Jarvis McGraw- Love this book. Fun, suspenseful, romantic historical fiction. You can't help but read it in one sitting!
  8. The Blue Castle by Lucy Maud Montgomery- I couldn't help but read this one in one sitting either. I LOVE this book! LOVE IT!!!! If you like Anne of Green Gables but want something a little older than READ IT!!!!
  9. Little House one the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder- All of her books are great one afternoon reads. And so nostalgic!
  10. Mr. Darcy's Diary by Amanda Grange- Most of the books in her Diary's series I read in one sitting.
  11. Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein- I think I read it over two days but it was fast! That book engaged me like few have before.
  12. Carry on Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham- One sitting cause it's SO GOOD!!!
  13. Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransom- I read almost all of the books in that series in one sitting or two. They're so much fun!
Okay I have to cut myself off here. I know I went over but there are actually so many more I could list here!

Top Ten Books on my Spring 2017 TBR List

And a random picture of my beautiful niece
because the world needs more pictures of her!
I'm really hoping with the wedding preparations that I can actually get in ten books this spring. Not sure but hopefully! Because of that I'm going to go ahead and list the ones I've already started but want to finish this spring. The rest of the books (except the last one) are ones that I borrowed from my Aunt while I was in Minnesota this past Thanksgiving. I'm excited about reading them all but have started none of them! Pathetic.

  1. Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly (already started)
  2. Catching Foxes by John Henderson (already started)
  3. Total Truth by Nancy Pearcey (already started)
  4. The Gurnsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Anne Shaffer and Anne Barrows
  5. Gilead by Marilynne Robinson
  6. Home by Marilynne Robinson
  7. Lila by Marilynne Robinson
  8. A Grief Observed by C.S. Lewis
  9. The Problem with Pain by C.S. Lewis
  10. Persuasion by Jane Austen (audiobook) (re-read)

Top Ten Tuesday FREEBIE!!!

This week's Top Ten Tuesday theme over at Broke and Bookish is a freebie!!!! I wasn't sure what exactly what I wanted to do but as I look back over my lists over the years most of time they are permeated by classics because that's what I mostly read. So today for this freebie theme I thought I would make a list of my Top Ten Favorite Modern Books! By modern I mean in the last couple decades.... in other words... for me, not a classic.... yet! I'm also excluding non-fiction to make my choosing easier. I'm also excluding books published posthumously (ahem Tolkien).
This post is for those of you who for some reason are reading my blog but don't like classics. I made this for you. ;)

  1. The Giver (whole series) by Lois Lowry
  2. Rakkety Tamm (whole Redwall series) by Brian Jacques
  3. Harry Potter (whole series) by J.K. Rowling
  4. The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith
  5. Ender's Shadow by Orson Scott Card
  6. Peace Like a River by Leif Enger
  7. Odd Thomas and Life Expectancy by Dean Koontz
  8. Binding of the Blades series by L.B. Graham
  9. The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak
  10. On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness (whole series) by Andrew Peterson
  11. The Help by Kathryn Stockett
  12. Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein
  13. The Martian by Andy Weir
  14. The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde
Could I actually narrow it down to ten? No! Do I ever? No! It was incredibly hard to get this list down to just fourteen. I drew a line at 1990, which helped a little bit.

My favorite presents every year at Christmas are pretty much always books. Therefore this is naturally one of my favorite prompts for Top Ten Tuesday. I already got some of the top ones off of my wishlist from the Broke and Bookish Secret Santa this year so those won't be reflected on this list.  I'm pretty sure that some of the books on my list will be under the tree for me (hopefully!) and I can't wait to open them.

  2. Christianity and Liberalism by J. Gresham Machem
  3. The Pursuit of God by A.W. Tozer
  4. Trusting God: Even When Life Hurts by Jerry Bridges
  5. Any in the Giver Quartet by Lois Lowry (except The Giver as I got that in the secret santa!)

  7. Call the Midwife by Jennifer Worth
  8. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by J.K. Rowling

Top Ten Tuesday- Characters I'd Name Something After

The theme for this week's Top Ten Tuesday is characters you'd name something (car/pet/kid) after.
It's a little scary how much I want to name my kids certain weird Tolkien names. I know I shouldn't but I do! Probably it would be better if I named my pets after them but it would be so much COOLER if my kid got named Gandalf don't you think? ;)
Anyways, here's my more realistic idea of what characters I would name a car/pet/kid after.

Children

  1. Darci(e) Elizabeth- I know I've mentioned this one here on the blog before. Obviously this one comes from Pride and Prejudice, my favorite book. I'm pretty stuck on this idea for a name though my family has tried to talk me out of it several times. I guess it will depend on what my future husband thinks of it.
  2. Aiden or Tozer (as a middle name)- This is for one of my favorite theologians A.W. (Aiden Wilson) Tozer.
  3. Arwen or Eowyn- I feel like these two are more realistic uses of Tolkien's names. They're not too weird.
  4. Anne (as a middle name)- From Anne of Green Gables of course though it could also be for Anne Elliot in Persuasion.
  5. Elinor, Eleanor, Elanor- I can't decide on how I would want this name spelled if I did utilize it. If I spelled it Elinor it could be after Elinor from Sense and Sensibility but if I spelled it Elanor it would be after Sam and Rosie's daughter in LOTR and then Eleanor is just another spelling I like of the name. Too many choices!
Vehicle
  1. Shadowflax- My car actually almost got name Shadowflax but I ended up going with Finn instead (which is not actually for Star Wars but that's a nice side effect).
  2. T.A.R.D.I.S.- Not literally but I did also think about naming my car the T.A.R.D.I.S. and it would have been awesome.
Pet
  1. Strider- From LOTR obviously. I knew a family who named their dog Strider and I always thought that was the neatest idea.
  2. Bilbo- Bilbo is one of my favorite characters and I would definitely name a pet after him. Faramir- Because much as I want to name my kid after my favorite character from LOTR I don't think he would ever forgive me so I'll have to name the dog Faramir instead.

Ten Books I Feel Differently About After Time has Passed

I haven't done a Top Ten Tuesday post in a while as none of the topics have intrigued me. This week though I'll be joining in. The theme is ten books I feel differently about after time has passed. Some are books that I used to hate but now love and others are ones I used to love that I'm now not quite so fond of.
  1. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien- When I first read LOTR as a child I was only reading it so I could watch the movies in theaters because that was my dad's rule. I scarcely remembered what I read and I re-read it a few years later and just wasn't crazy about it. However, when I was a teenager I re-read them again and fell in love and since them I've been re-reading them over and over again and loving them even more each time. LOTR is currently my second favorite book and I'm so glad I changed my mind about it. :)
  2. Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott- I was pretty neutral about it the first time I read it but now I love it!
  3. Mara, Daughter of the Nile by Eloise Jarvis McGraw- Not a fan of it as a child but loved it when I re-read it this year.
  4. Emma by Jane Austen- This was always my least favorite of Jane Austen's novels, though I did enjoy it. When I re-read it last year though I saw so much more to it then I originally had I love it just as much as the others now.
  5. Anne of the Island by L.M. Montgomery- I've always adored the Anne of Green Gables series but Anne of the Island was my least favorite as Anne irked me incessantly in it. When I re-read it last year though I really appreciated it a lot more and now it is actually one of my favorites of the series. Anne still irks me a little in it but she ends up with Gilbert in the end so it's all good. ;)
  6. Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers- I re-read it a couple years ago and I really enjoyed it as opposed to when I read it as a child. I thought it was so boring as a kid but when re-reading it I saw so much more of the wit and humor in it and loved it!
  7. Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Graham- I scarcely remembered anything about this book when I re-read it a couple years ago but I knew I hadn't been that fond of it as a child and I thought it was boring. This re-read though totally changed my mind. This is one of the most beautiful books I've ever read and well worth the read!
  8. The Homeschool Detective series by John Bibee- This was one of my favorite series as a child because the idea of kids that were homeschooled like me solving mysteries could not help but intrigue me! I re-read this series a few years ago and I was shattered to realize that the writing in the series is really kind of subpar. While they're still enjoyable in their own right they do leave a lot to be desired in other areas.
  9. Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift- With my re-read last year I really disliked it. I don't remember being crazy about it the first time I read it but I definitely did NOT like it this time around.
  10. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott (and the rest of the series)- I always really enjoyed these books as a kid but when I read them last year they came off as moralistic and preachy to me and I didn't like the philosophy. So overall while they're okay I just didn't enjoy them as I had as a kid.

Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Books that Will Make You Laugh

The theme for this week's Top Ten Tuesday is ten books that will make you laugh. I love to laugh so this should be a piece of cake. ;)
These are in no particular order.
  1. The Martian by Andy Weir
  2. Leave it to Psmith or The Golf Omnibus by P.G. Wodehouse- Really any book by Wodehouse is guaranteed laughs.
  3. Pride and Prejudice and Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen- Most all of Austen's novels will make me laugh at some point but especially those two.
  4. The Pushcart War by Jean Merrill
  5. Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare
  6. On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness by Andrew Peterson
  7. The Best Things in Life: A Contemporary Socrates Looks at Power, Pleasure, Truth and the Good Life by Peter Kreeft
  8. A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain
  9. Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll
  10. The Importance of Being Ernest by Oscar Wilde
  11. The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster
  12. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson
I did some serious cutting down of this list to try and make it ten (it used to be about twenty) but I simply couldn't cut it down anymore. These are the books that just about guarantee me a laugh every time I read them.

Top Ten Books Every Christian Should Read

The theme for this week's Top Ten Tuesday is Top Ten Books Every X Should Read. I decided to replace that X with Christian.

So these are my top ten books every Christian should read. These are in no particular order and taking the Bible for granted here goes.

  1. The Institutes of the Christian Religion by John Calvin- No I haven't quite finished it yet but I will stand by it and say it is one of the most comprehensive and well written books about Christianity available. The actual original version is two huge volumes each the size of LOTR so I would recommend reading an abridged version. I started reading the huge volumes and changed my mind eventually and switched to an abridged version, which was a good decision in my mind though I don't normally recommend abridged books.
  2. The Pursuit of God by A.W. Tozer- I read this three or so years ago. It is a really excellent book and I loved how straightforward Tozer was in it. He says it like it is, pushing you on in the pursuit of God. Beautifully written.
  3. Chosen by God by R.C. Sproul- A book that made a huge impact in my life at the time. R.C. Sproul is excellent about explaining complicated theology succinctly and this book was no exception.
  4. The Valley of Vision by various Puritans- I read this last year and it is the most beautiful book of prayers. Each one challenged me in my faith and pushed me to ponder God's Word and to worship Him. This is an absolute must read!
  5. The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert by Rosaria Champagne Butterfield- I just finished it last week but I know that I will re-read it over and over again in the future. It's about homosexuality, yes, but it's also about so much more: marriage, adoption, and what it means to be a Christian. This was a book that really challenged me to think about my faith, what it means to me and how I can grow in it.
  6. The Westminster Confession of Faith- Sort of like Calvin's Institutes in how comprehensive it is and actually I think maybe more comprehensive. I think I preferred the Institutes though.
  7. Trusting God: Even When Life Hurts by Jerry Bridges- A book about trusting God simply put. One of the best theological books I've read and very meaningful to me as trusting God is definitely something that I've had to struggle with when I my uncle passed away to cancer, or when my Grandma had her stroke or when both of my Grandpas passed away. Trusting God is crucial to a Christina's walk. If you can't trust God... who can you trust?
  8. Christian Love by Hugh Binning- A little book recommend to me by my brother that overturned what I thought about love and how I should be carrying it out. It may have been written by a Puritan hundreds of years ago but it is absolutely relevant in this present day.
  9. What Does the Bible Really Teach about Homosexuality by Kevin DeYoung- I read this one this year as well and loved it. It's concise and full of Biblical wisdom. In this present day I think it is so important that Christians can answer this question and this book does a great job.
  10. The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis- When I read this several years ago it scared me. The realness scared me. At that point in my life Satan started to scare me and I realized the realness of sin and the constant temptation we are under and that every day, every moment Satan is trying to pry us away from God. This book made me want to cling closer to God but it also made me more aware of the temptations that I face every day.
There are so many theology books I want to read in the future... My list just for the ones I want to get to this year is already long. I'm sure this list will change in the future as I read more books but for now these are the top ten books I think are must reads for Christians.

Ten of my Top Five/four Star Reads I've Read Recently

The theme for this week's Top Ten Tuesday is ten of my top five star reads that I've read recently. So I realized that I've not rated a lot of books five stars so far this year. Looking over the books I've read so far it's because while they were almost five star quality there was always some little thing (bad language or something like that) that held me back from giving it the full five stars. so I'm going to include some of those top four star reads as well.
  1. Gathering Blue and Son by Lois Lowry- five stars each
  2. Othello by William Shakespeare- five stars
  3. What Does the Bible Really Teach about Homosexuality by Kevin DeYoung- five stars
  4. The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery- five stars
  5. Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein- four stars
  6. Mr. Darcy's Diary by Amanda Grange (really most all of her diary series)- four stars
  7. Matilda by Roald Dahl- four stars
  8. The Martian by Andy Weir- four stars
  9. All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr- four stars
  10. The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton- four stars
These are the books I would highly recommend this year so far. I've read some great ones this year. :) Reviews are linked so be sure to read them before you read the book so you'll know what you're getting into. :)

Top Ten Children's Books I Really Love but I Feel Like I Don't Talk About Enough

The theme for this week's Top Top Ten Tuesday is to list your top ten books you love but feel like you don't talk about enough. There are a ton of books I feel like I don't talk enough so for this post I'm going to narrow it down to children's books I don't feel like I talk about enough so this is of course going to omit the obvious ones I love like Harry Potter and Anne of Green Gables. We're talking about ones I DON'T talk about enough here. Making this list I realized that it's ridiculous I don't talk about these books more. I loved all of these books and re-read them all multiple times as a child. I read and re-read a lot as a kid. And making this list makes me want to re-read these all again!
  1. Detectives in Togas by Henry Winterfield- A childhood favorite and one you should definitely hand this one to your children.
  2. The Mad Scientist Club by Bertrand R. Brinley- This is for the geeky kids out there. Just kidding, it's for all the kids. :)
  3. Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robison- Such a fun story.
  4. Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle by Betty MacDonald- This was one of my favorite little series as a kid. Basically the books are about a widowed old lady who comes up with cures for children's bad behavior.
  5. Freddy the Pig series by Walter R. Brooks- A pig that talks and solves mysteries. Sign me up! ;)
  6. My Father's Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett- Stuck on an island with all sorts of odd creatures who's to rescue you? A dragon of course!
  7. Castaways of the Flying Dutchman series by Brian Jacques- Everyone knows about Jacques's Redwall series but his other series is not as well known but it's still quite enjoyable.
  8. The Courage of Sarah Noble by Alice Dalgleish- I don't remember this book terribly well but I do recall loving it as a kid. It's a great story for teaching about bravery as well as the settlers pioneering new terrain.
  9. The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Spear- I recently handed my sister this book and she loved it. Her enthusiastic gushings reminded me how much I too had loved it as a child.
  10. The Saturdays Elizabeth Enright- A delightful story about a family who each Saturday one child gets to take the joint allowance of everyone and do whatever they want.
  11. The Wolves of Willoughby Chase by Joan Aiken- One of my hands down favorite books as a kid.
  12. From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg- Siblings hiding out in a museum. :)
So yeah it ended up being twelve not ten but there were so many!
Have a kid? Hand these books to them now? Don't have a kid? Read them yourself now! ;)

Top Ten Tuesday- Characters I Like that most Dislike

The theme for this week's Top Ten Tuesday is either characters you like that most dislike or characters you dislike that most like. I decided to go with the characters I like that most dislike.

Characters that I like that most dislike

1) Melanie Wilkes from Gone With the Wind- Many think she's a wimp and too nice and sweet but while she is kind of sickly sweet sometimes I love her because she is truly kind and generous and really is the only person like that in the whole story.
2) Amy March from Little Women ect.- Amy gets a bad rap from readers because she was kind of a selfish brat when she was younger and "stole" Laurie from Jo. In my opinion Amy is an under appreciated character. Her struggles are unique and I think harder for readers to relate to. I personally found her story very interesting and I like seeing her character grow.
3) Henry Higgins from Pygmalion/My Fair Lady- I know he's kind of a jerk but I still love him. He's hilarious and really does have a heart... though it's hard to find oftentimes.
4) Cosette from Lés Miserables- Another one who gets a bad rap because she distracted Marius from Eponine who everyone loves instead. No Cosette isn't my favorite character but I do like her and I think it's silly that people don't. You can like both Cosette and Eponine!
5) Edmund Bertram from Mansfield Park- Readers dislike him because he gets distracted by the beautiful and dynamic Mary Crawford instead of noticing Fanny Price. Sure, that annoys me too but I still like him. I think it's a little unfair that people get so frustrated with him for that when they tend to pardon Elizabeth Bennet for being attracted to George Wickham. He's still a good man and while not my favorite Austen hero he was an honorable man, kind and intelligent who in the end did realize his error.
6) Fanny Price from Mansfield Park- Speaking of Mansfield Park.... Mansfield Park in general just gets a bad rap! I really like Fanny Price. The reason most don't like her is because she just happens to not be Elizabeth Bennet. She's quiet, shy, reserved. Readers think of her as a pushover. FYI, she's not a pushover! She stands up for herself when she refuses to act and she stands up for herself when she refuses to marry Henry Crawford. Yes, oftentimes she is a dutiful young women doing most anything asked of her. That's not necessarily a bad thing though. She happens to be a nice and helpful person... that's what that is. I think she doesn't resonate well with modern audiences because this is not something they can identify with... we live in a very selfish generation that hasn't learned to be helpful and kind very well. My little rant. I guess I probably could dedicate a post to it.

And that's all I can think for right now. :)

Top Ten Books I'm Looking Forward to Reading this Year

This week's Top Ten Tuesday is a freebie! I'm going to go with the top ten books I'm looking forward to reading this year. There were some that I was really looking forward to that I've already read (I'm specifically thinking of Code Name Verity and Mr. Darcy's Diary here) but for the books I have left that I'm hoping to get read this year these are the ones I'm most looking forward to.
So in no particular order....

  1. The Scarlet Pimpernel series by Emmuska Orczy- I've read and re-read The Scarlet Pimpernel but this year I am really looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
  2. The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery- I've read some rave reviews of this one from fellow Montgomery lovers so I'm excited to read it!
  3. Cinder by Marissa Meyer- This is going to be the year I read it... and hopefully the rest of the series too!
  4. The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton- I've read some great things about this book.
  5. Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevesky- I was pleasantly surprised by The Brothers Karamazov last year so now I'm excited to read another Dostoevsky book.
  6. Waverley by Sir Walter Scott- My re-read of Ivanhoe last year really got me interested in reading more of Scott's books so this is next!
  7. Matilda by Roald Dahl- I'm not sure how I missed this book as a kid as I read many of Dahl's other books but nonetheless I did. This year I'm fixing that!
  8. Through Gates of Splendor by Elizabeth Elliot- I'm really not sure how I've not read this book by now but I'm reading it this year.
  9. The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert by Rosaria Butterfield- One I've been meaning to read for awhile and my parents got it last year so once my sister is done reading it (that may take awhile) I'm going to read it!
  10. Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain- I got this in the Broke and Bookish secret santa so I'm excited to read it this year. Multiple people have recommended this book to me before.

There's a lot of books that I'm looking forward to RE-reading but I decided to limit myself today. :)
