Top Ten Books That I'm Not Sure I Want to Read

This week for Top Ten Tuesday the theme is "books I'm not sure I want to read". Most of these are more modern books and I tend to be wary of modern books.
  1. Wuthering Heights- Unfortunately it's on my Classics Club list so I'll have to read it eventually. I even bought it for fifty cents at Goodwill so I had no excuse. :)
  2. Fangirl- There was a lot of hype about it in the book blogging world in the last few months and I thought it might actually be a new book worth reading but then I heard a few negative reviews about it so then I couldn't decide. Still haven't decided whether or not I want to pick it up or not.
  3. Eleanor and Park- Same as above. I figure if I read either of the two it will be Fangirl and then if like it I'll read Eleanor and Park
  4. Atlas Shrugged- Another book on my Classics Club list. It's so long and more modern.
  5. The Fault in Our Stars- A modern favorite that just got adapted into a movie that is incredibly popular. It sounds interesting but I think I would disagree it on a theological level.
  6. War and Peace- Because it is so long I'm just not sure I want to get started on it. :)
  7. The Help- A modern book I've heard lots of good things about but I'm normally wary of modern books but I think I'll give it a try.
  8. The Luthier's Apprentice- A modern historical novel that I heard good things about. I think I'll try it out as well.
  9. Memoirs of a Geisha- Another modern novel that is quite popular and I think will be safe for me to try out. It is historical and I always like history.
  10. Howl's Moving Castle- A more moderne fantasy novel I've heard great things about. I love good fantasy and I hope this proves to be one.
If you've been keeping up with the blog you'll know that I'm participating in my first "Bout of Books" coming up soon, which I'm super excited about! Also, I got myself a pet pig! Read about my Wilbur here. :)

  1. Yes on The Fault in Our Stars and Fangirl. Wuthering Heights will be on my classics list when I right out the 50 though it's definitely one I'm reluctant to read. I actually enjoyed Memoirs of a Geisha and I really didn't expect to. The Japanese culture has never been a topic I've been interested in and I never felt the need to pick it up. I ended up reading it for book club and really enjoyed it. I think you're the only other person who doesn't want to read The Help! It's not on my list but it should be. People keep telling me to read it but I really just don't want to!

  3. Wuthering Heights is on my Classic Club list and I have heard not great things, so I guess I should have added it to my list. I have read Fangirl and Elanor and Park and while they weren't bad, weren't great either. Atlas Shrugged made my list too!

  4. I have to admit to being one of the people who absolutely hated Fangirl! I hated it, but everyone else seemed to love it. I just found it to be quite boring and the pointless fanfiction for a book that doesn't actually exist was just too much to deal with. I have bought 2 of the authors other books though, so I am still considering Eleanor & Park. I really enjoyed The Help, I thought it was a really brilliant book and I thought they did an amazing job adapting it into a movie as well.

    1. Thanks for stopping by! I remember your review of Fangirl was one of the ones that had me questioning it.

  5. I'm up in the air about Rainbow Rowell books as well. I'll probably try them out at some point, but I worry that I might not like them. I actually really like Wuthering Heights. Because it's a classic, the writing may be a bit clunky, but it's also poetic and I really love the story. It's one that you'll either love forever or really hate. When you finish it, look for a '90s movie version that has Ralph Fiennes and Juliet Binoche. It's phenomenal! :D Thanks so much for stopping by my blog. Happy Tuesday! :D

  6. I'm no fan of Emily Bronte, give me Jane Eyre any day! As for War and Peace get the copy by the two transators of Anna Karinina (sp) that did Oprah's Book Club a number of years back. The language flows more smoothly. FIOS was a marvelous book, but I didn't run out to see the movie, because Tolkin, Harry Potter, C.S. Lewis, all live in my head better than any translation. Not enamoured with Rowell.Atlas Shrugged is a great book, The Fountainhead even better (and check out THAT movie with Gary Cooper andLauren Bacall) if you can set aside the politics. Memoirs of a Geshia is a great book. And...add another fantasy...Tenebrae Manor. That one really surprised me

  7. I can agree with your list ……. all but War and Peace. I just finished it and, while yes it's long, it is so worth the read! I plan to re-read it again, hopefully in the not too distant future. I think I have to disagree with Andrea, if she means to read the Pevear-Volonhonsky translation ------- they write in such simplistic terms and completely kill the grandeur of the story (I read Anna Karenina translated by them and still feel that I haven't really read the actual book). I read the Alymer & Louise Maude translation and it was very good. They knew Tolstoy, which probably helped with producing a good translation.

Oh, and Wuthering Heights ………… I really disliked the story but the writing was quite good. Emily's characters though, for me, were so unbelievable that I really struggled to finish. But I know that other people really like it, so there you go!

    1. Thank you for your tips! I don't normally like simplified translations so I'll be on the look out for the one you mentioned.
