Top Ten Books I've Recently Added to my TBR List

This week's Top Ten Tuesday theme is the top ten books I've recently added to my TBR list. I'm always adding books to my TBR list but these are the ones I've added most recently.

  1. The Trinity by Augustine- I'm always on the lookout to expand my theological horizons and this looks interesting.
  2. The Man Who Knew Too Much by G.K. Chesterton- I do love G.K. Chesterton.
  3. The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett- I actually have not seen the movie (embarrassing I know) so since I haven't I want to go ahead and take the opportunity to read it before I watch it.
  4. The Messenger by Marcus Zusak- I loved The Book Thief so I'm intrigued to read another of Zusak's books.
  5. A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs- To be honest I though I had already added that to my TBR but I guess it was just my mental one and not my Goodreads one.
  6. Howard End by E.M. Forester- I read A Room With a View last year and I want to try another of Forester's books.
  7. Waverley by Sir Walter Scott- I loved my re-read of Ivanhoe this past year so I'm eager to read another of Scott's books.
  8. What Does the Bible Really Teach About Homosexuality by Kevin DeYoung- An obviously controversial topic and one that, while I know my own feelings on, I want to learn more about.
  9. Larkrise to Candleford by Flora Thompson- I'm watching the show right now and I'm feeling the need to read the book!
  10. Call the Midwife by Jennifer Worth- I've already watched this show and I need to get the book read now!

Top Ten Books I Wouldn't Mind Santa Leaving Under My Tree This Year

This week's Top Ten Tuesday theme is the top the books I wouldn't mind Santa leaving under my tree this year! :) I made purchases of my dreams the other day at the local used bookstore so a couple got axed off this list. :)

  1. Cinder by Marissa Meyer- I need to get around to reading this series and if I owned a copy it would be far more likely to happen.
  2. Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy- I realized recently I don't own this book and I really like it.
  3. Call the Midwife by Jennifer Worth- I want to read this so much after watching the show!
  4. The Martian by Andy Weir- I'm hugely intrigued by this book. :)
  5. The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery- I'm a huge Anne of Green Gables fan and I've heard rave reviews of this one so I'd love to get it and read it for myself.
  6. The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams- Because I need to get around to this book too and as I said above.... far more likely to happen if I own it.
  7. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling- The only one of the series I don't own yet.
  8. The Golf Omnibus by P.G. Wodehouse- This book is HILARIOUS! It's such a fun collect of classic Wodehouse stories. I used to pick it up at the library all the time and read a couple stories and never actually check it out. I obviously just need my own copy. ;)
  9. Gods and Generals by Jeff Shaara- I own Killer Angels and Last Full Measure but not Gods and Generals! I love it!
  10. Miniatures and Morals by Peter Leithart- So I can stop stealing my parent's copy all of the time. This is a great book about Austen's novels. :) I actually did ask for this for Christmas so hopefully I get it!
There's so many more I want of course but these would definitely make me smile the brightest!

Top Ten Quotes I Loved from Books I Read this Year

I have not been keeping track of favorite book quotes as well as I did last year but I'll try my best. :) Additionally, I've forgone including quotes from The Valley of Vision even though it had my very favorites because as it was a book of prayers every quote was a huge long prayer so I figured that would be too long for this post. Just go read it yourself and enjoy! ;)
  1. "It's taste might be forgotten, but not the tradition."- Death of a Red Heroine by Qui Xiaolong
  2. "If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more."- Emma by Jane Austen (re-read)
  3. "I never travel without my diary. One should always have something sensational to read on the train."- The Importance of Being Ernest by Oscar Wilde
  4. "Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved reading. One does not love to breathe."- To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee (re-read)
  5. "The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience."- To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee (re-read)
  6. "Every day is important for us because it is ordained by God. If we are bored with life there is something wrong with our concept of God and His involvement in our daily lives. Even the most dull and tedious days of our lives are ordained by God and ought to be used by us to glorify Him."- Trusting God by Jerry Bridges
  7. "Because God is sovereign he, He is able to answer. Because He is faithful to his promises, He will answer."- Trusting God by Jerry Bridges
  8. "Above all, don't lie to yourself. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love."- The Brother's Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
  9. "Of course Lady Arabella could not suckle the young heir herself. Ladies Arabella never can."- Doctor Throne by Anthony Trollope
  10. "Sometimes heroism is nothing more than patience, curiosity and a refusal to panic"- Peace Like a River by Leif Enger

Top Ten Book to Movie Adaptations I Still Need to Watch

This week's Top Ten Tuesday theme is the Top Ten Book to Movie /miniseries/TV show Adaptations I Still Need to Watch. There are actually a fair number of those. I keep getting side tracked. :(

  1. Gods and Generals based off of Jeff Shaara's novel same entitled novel AND Gettysburg based off of Michael Shaara's novel Killer Angels (one of my favorite books!)- I'm not sure how I haven't seen these yet as I love the books and basically all the rest of my family has seen them!
  2. Death Comes to Pemberly based off of the same entitled novel by P.D. James - I've actually seen part of it but never finished it. I was only so-so on the book but I was intrigued to see the movie because Jenna-Louise Coleman (from Doctor Who!) plays Lydia in it!
  3. The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency (TV show) based off of Alexander McCall Smith's same entitled series- I've seen a couple episodes of it and loved it but I never watched the rest of them. :(
  4. The Last of the Mohicans based off of the same entitled book by James Fenimore Cooper- I'm actually not sure what version I want to watch. The Daniel Day-Lewis version is the most famous but that's not the one my Dad owns so I might just watch whichever one he has or I might try and get ahold of the Daniel Day-Lewis version. Not sure yet.
  5. Dombey and Son based off the same entitled book by Charles Dickens- I've been meaning to watch this for a REALLY long time.... ever since I read the book... which was many years ago.

  6. Martin Chuzzlewit based off of the same entitled book by Charles Dickens- I've been meaning to watch this for a long time too... almost as long as Dombey and Son.
  7. Bleak House based off of the same entitled novel by Charles Dickens- Another I've been meaning to watch for a long time. There's two versions that are considered excellent so I guess that means I'll be watching both.
  8. Odd Thomas based off of the same entitled novel by Dean Koontz- I really need to get around to watching this! I loved the book and my Dad who's read the book and watched the movie says I'll love the movie too.
  9. How Green was My Valley based off the same entitled book by Richard Lewellyn- It has Maureen O'Hara who is one of my favorite actresses or else I might not even take the time to watch it as from what I can tell it doesn't fall the book to closely and we all know what books like that do to my blood pressure. ;)
  10. The Moonstone based off the same entitled book by Wilkie Collins- I love The Moonstone a lot and there's a version that has Keeley Hawes and Greg Wise (and if you don't know who they are you obviously don't watch period dramas) which looks good. There's another version too that's a miniseries. Maybe I'll watch both!

Making this list renews my longing to watch these movies! I need to get around to it!

Top Ten Debut Authors Who Have Me Looking Forward To Their Sophomore Novel

My readers know I don't read a lot of new books but there are some I do so here's a short list of authors who have me looking forward to their sophomore novel. Some of them actually have written their second novel but I just haven't read it yet. :) Half of the list is modern authors that I'm waiting for their second book and the other half is authors I wish had written a sophomore novel.
ALSO! I am hosting two reading challenges for 2016. One is the Hard Core Re-Reading Challenge, which is a repeat from last year and the other is a new challenge for me to host which is the 12 Month Classics challenge. If you're interested go check them out!
And a little meme to capture my last week. :)

Newbies with sophomores
  1. Helene Wecker- I read The Golem and the Jinni earlier this year and I'm looking forward to what she puts out next, which from what I've read will be a sequel!
  2. D.E. Ireland- I read Wouldn't it be Deadly last year and while it wasn't the greatest thing I ever read I did enjoy it and I'm interested to read it's sequel Move Your Blooming Corpse, which is already out.
  3. Kathryn Stockett- I read The Help last year (yeah I'm a little behind the times on that one) but it seems she never wrote a book after it! She needs to write a sophomore novel!
Oldies who should have written more than one- Obviously Harper Lee would have been at the top of this list but with the release of Go Set a Watchman this year that's not relevant anymore.
  1. Margaret Mitchell- I read Gone With the Wind earlier this year, which I had mixed feelings about but overall enjoyed. I would have been fascinated to read what else she had to write but Gone With the Wind was the only book she ever published.
  2. Emily Bronte- Now I hated Wuthering Heights.... okay I didn't hate it but it certainly wasn't my favorite but I did think it was very beautiful writing and I wonder what else she might have written... maybe it would have been better.
  3. Anne Sewell- She wrote the classic Black Beauty but never wrote another novel afterwards as she died not long after it's release.
  4. Oscar Wilde- I really enjoyed The Picture of Dorian Gray when I read it last year. However, it was the only novel Wilde ever wrote though he wrote many plays, most famously The Importance of Being Ernest.
  5. Anne Frank- You can only write on diary so... ;)
Those are eight I can think of off the top of my head. Are there any I missed? Comment below and let me know!

Top Ten Books if you like J.R.R. Tolkien

This week's Top Ten Tuesday theme is the top ten books to read if you like a certain popular author or book that would be similar.
Tolkien is the greatest fantasy writer. I think few would argue this. I was looking up what the first fantasy novels were and it talked about how it was difficult to define when the genre first began as people believed in the wonders depicted in works like Midsummer Night's Dream or Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. However they said that modern fantasy began with George McDonald who re-created the genre. George McDonald, who wrote books such as The Princess and the Goblin and At the Back of the North Wind, directly influenced J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. So Tolkien was also one of the first fantasy writers and directly influenced by the person who re-created the genre.
If you read my blog you'll know how much I love Tolkien's books. The world building he did with his books is incredible. So I though for this top ten Tuesday theme I would go with the top ten books to read if you like J.R.R. Tolkien. These will of course all be fantasy. None of them in my opinion measure up to the greatness of Tolkien but they are still good.

  1. The Princess and the Goblin by George McDonald- Speaking of which! ;)
  2. The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
  3. Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
  4. The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander
  5. The Dragon King series and others by Stephen R. Lawhead- Those are the only books of his I've read but I think he's more famous for others of his fantasy series.
  6. Binding of the Blade series by L.B. Graham
  7. Redwall series by Brian Jacques
  8. The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini- These aren't my favorite but I do think Paolini did a great job with world building and he had a good start with his first but then in my opinion they went downhill after that.
  9. The Wingfeather saga by Andrew Peterson
  10. The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper

Now a disclaimer. I know that George R.R. Martin and his Song of Fire and Ice series is widely acclaimed and considered great fantasy but I haven't read them and I won't read them because however good his books may be, he decided to also include inappropriate content in them.

So, any great fantasy novels you would include on this list? Comment and let me know!
ALSO.... be sure to check out my GIVEAWAY!!!

This week's Top Ten Tuesday theme is my Top Ten Books on my Fall TBR list!
  1. The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner
  2. For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway
  3. The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker
  4. The Little Britches series by Ralph Moody (8 novels) (half of them are re-reads)
  5. Room with a View by E.M. Forster
  6. A Bear Called Paddington by Michael Bond (re-read)

So what are you looking forward to reading this fall? :)

Top Ten Favorite Non-Fiction Books

This week's top ten Tuesday theme is a freebie so I decided to go with my top ten favorite non-fiction books. I read a lot of fiction and that tends be what I talk about the most here on my blog so I think it would be fun to look at my favorite non-fiction books. :) We'll take the Bible as a granted. :)
Because I couldn't narrow down my list I'm going to make two top ten lists.... ten that are theological and ten that are not. With some of these the lines between theological and non-theological are blurred so I just threw the book where I thought it fit best. :(
Also there are a lot of great non-fiction books I have yet to read so just because it didn't make it on the list doesn't mean I hate it... I might just have not read it yet.

Top Ten Theological Books

  1. Chosen by God by R.C. Sproul- I know I've mentioned this one before here. It made a big difference in my life when I read and really helped me to understand a subject that had always confused me.
  2. The Westminster Confession of Faith- Another book that hugely influenced me when I read it. It was somewhat tedious to read but once again it helped me to understand theology that I hadn't quite grasped yet.
  3. Trusting God: Even When Life Hurts by Jerry Bridges- I just read this for the first time this year but I absolutely loved it! My advice.... read it before life hurts. I read it after the hurt of life (many deaths in the family) and it was so helpful but I also know that it will help me to handle future life hurts so much better than I handled the previous.
  4. Christianity and Liberalism by J. Gresham Machem- A thought provoking and insightful book. Read it!
  5. The Valley of Vision: A Collection of Puritan Prayers- I got this for my birthday this year and read through it slowly, reading a couple prayers every night. This books, as I said in my review, was almost like scripture. I know the Puritans get a bad rap nowadays but I think it is so unfairly bestowed. Read this book and you'll know what I mean. It's beautiful!
  6. The Pursuit of God by A.W. Tozer- I read this a couple years ago. I loved it for just speaking the truth even though sometimes it wasn't what you as a Christian weren't used to saying. Tozer had a very unapologetic way of writing. It encouraged me in my walk with God. Highly recommend this book!
  7. Pushing the Antithesis by Greg Bahnsen- A great look at presuppositional apologetics and far more readable than Van Til's (considered the "father" of presuppositional apologetics) books.
  8. Don't Waste Your Life by John Piper- About not wasting your life.... duh. ;) A great read and a good poke in the side. :)
  9. Christian Love by Hugh Binning- A recommendation from my brother and I'm glad I took it. It makes you re-think love. Another Puritan author.... take a chance!
  10. The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis- An often funny little book with a guest appearance by G.K. Chesterton.... read it! I'm not sure if this is theology or not so.... theology! It makes the lists even anyways. ;)

Top Ten Non-Fiction Books (non-theological)

  1. Miniatures and Morals: The Christian Novels of Jane Austen by Peter Leithart- I've read this book so many times! It's an incredible analysis of Jane Austen's novels and points that you never would have even considered are brought to light. Very insightful!
  2. Up from Slavery by Booker T. Washington- I found this highly inspirational when I read it back in high school. Washington didn't spend time complaining about his plight in life.... he worked.... and he worked hard. A little lesson people need to take to heart.
  3. Exploring J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit by Corey Olsen- I read this a little bit before the Hobbit movies started coming out. I picked it up randomly but I'm so glad I read it. It was an interesting analysis of The Hobbit. I think people focus on analysis of LOTR and others of Tolkien's works more so than The Hobbit but The Hobbit actually has a lot to look at as well. Corey Olsen is also known as The Tolkien Professor. My brother is a big fan of his stuff.
  4. The Rape of Nanking by Iris Chang- Wow! This book is scary and amazing! If Foxe's Book of Martyrs shocked you than this one will too.
  5. Here I Stand: A Life of Martin Luther by Roland Bainton- Very well written and researched. I learned so much about Luther from this.
  6. Foxes Book of Martyrs by John Foxe- I read this in high school and it shocked me! It was sad and inspiring at the same time.
  7. The Best Things in Life by Peter Kreeft- I read this in high school and it is so funny by so thought provoking! The catchphrase for it is "A contemporary Socrates looks at power, pleasure, truth and the good life." Pretty much that's the book. :) Kreeft also wrote another book that's great called The Unaborted Socrates
  8. A Child's History of England by Charles Dickens- I know I just read it a couple weeks ago but it deserves a place on this list. I wish all history was as fun to read as this book and as funny!
  9. Economics in One Lesson by Henry Hazzlit- The best book about economics I've read. Simple enough even I could understand it. ;)
  10. I Kissed Dating Goodbye and Boy Meets Girl by Joshua Harris- Now I don't agree 100% with these books. I know sometimes they can be controversial. However I do think they have some great points. And when it comes to courtship or dating... honestly I don't think it's about the terms.... it's about what you're actual doing. You can label something anything you like but that  doesn't mean it is that. For me, the most important thing in a relationship is not whether you are following the "Ten steps for a perfect courtship" but whether you and your S.O. are following God.

As you can see I love non-fiction almost as much as I love fiction and non-fiction has also had a huge impact on my life... probably more so than fiction... which is saying a lot.
Any great non-fiction books you'd recommend? You can kind of tell from lists what I like when it comes to non-fiction: theology, history and satire. However I'm always ready to try something new. :)

Ten Finished Series I Have Yet to Finish

The theme for this week's Top Ten Tuesday is ten finished series that I have yet to finish.
I'm not sure I have ten unfinished series but I guess we'll see!
  1. The Giver series by Lois Lowry- Hoping to finish it next year.
  2. The Little Britches series by Ralph Moody- Planning on finishing it this year.
  3. The Scarlet Pimpernel series by Emmuska Orczy- Maybe next year? I really want to read the rest of the books but I'm not sure when I'll find time. :(
  4. Dune series by Frank Herbert- This series is kind of on the back burner for finishing. I liked the first one but I'm just not sure when I'll read the rest of the books in the series.
  5. Mary Poppins series by P.L. Travers- I have two left of the series. I re-read the ones I'd already read last year and loved the so I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the rest of the series.
  6. The Three Musketeers series by Alexander Dumas- I never realized there were more than one until just recently. I don't know if I'll finish the series or not. The Three Musketeers was not one of my favorite books.
  7. Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz- I loved the first one so hopefully I'll find time to read the rest in the series soon.
  8. The Wingfeather saga by Andrew Peterson- I loved this series so much but I haven't read the last book yet. We just got it recently.
  9. The Father Brown series by G.K. Chesterton- I now have two of them read. I'll get around to the rest as time allows. No hurry.
  10. The Freddy the Pig series by Walter R. Brooks- A favorite childhood series. My parents keeping getting us one or two at Christmas time to finish off our collection of them but I can't keep up!
So I lied. I did have ten unfinished series! There were probably more if I had looked harder.

Top Ten Books That Would Be On My Syllabus If I Taught Classics 101

Today's theme for Top Ten Tuesday is top ten books that would be on my syllabus if I taught X 101. I went with classics because.... duh... this is Lois. ;) Some of these are my favorites others of these I like but they're not my absolute favorite though I think they should be included because they are great literature. I tried to include a mixture of more modern classics and classic classics.
I also included a secondary list. Because if I had this class I would give them extra credit for reading the secondary reading list. Now I really want to teach this class!

  1. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
  2. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
  3. David Copperfield by Charles Dickens
  4. Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain (I prefer it to Tom Sawyer)
  5. Macbeth by William Shakespeare
  6. Beowulf by Unknown
  7. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
  8. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
  9. 1984 or Animal Farm by George Orwell
  10. Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
Secondary Reading
  1. Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott
  2. The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
  3. Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare
  4. Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
  5. Les Miserables by Victor Hugo
  6. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
  7. Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
  8. Emma by Jane Austen
  9. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
  10. Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy
There are obviously a LOT of great classics so of course I missed some good ones. Even though I've read so many classics there are so many I still have yet to read so just because your favorite isn't on here doesn't mean it doesn't deserve to be! Frankenstein, 1984, Animal Farm, David Copperfield, Great Expectations and Anna Karenina are not my favorites but I can appreciate them and I think they are very interesting books to look at and study.
Any you would add?

Top Ten Auto-buy Authors

The theme for this week's top ten Tuesday is your top ten auto-buy authors. So you all know I read mostly classic works so most of these authors aren't putting out books anymore. I'm just going to list the ones that I don't already own all of their works (which is why Jane Austen isn't on the list). For those not familiar with some of these authors, I have put in parentheses one of their more famous works.

  1. J.R.R. Tolkien (Lord of the Rings)
  2. Charles Dickens (David Copperfield)
  3. Agatha Christie (Murder on the Orient Express)
  4. C.S. Lewis (The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe)
  5. Louisa May Alcott (Little Women)
  6. Lucy Maud Montgomery (Anne of Green Gables)
  7. Emmuska Orczy (The Scarlet Pimpernel)
  8. G.A. Henty (In the Reign of Terror)
  9. Brian Jacques (Redwall)
  10. P.G. Wodehouse (The Code of the Woosters)
With these authors I would have no hesitation in buying their novels. They are tried and true authors who have never let me down. :)

Top Ten Authors I've Read the Most Books From

This week's them is the top ten authors I've read he most books from. Now we already did one of the top ten authors we own the books of and these lists will be pretty similar. Looking back at that list though I see I owned a lot less books then. I thankfully have Goodreads to tell me the answers to this list though there are books (mostly ones I read as a child) that still haven't gotten put on Goodreads.
  1. Agatha Christie- According to Goodreads I've read 69 of her books... I'm not sure if that number is totally accurate... I think I've read more than that. I've read almost all of her books.
  2. P.G.Wodehouse- According to Goodreads I've read 43 of his books... that number is probably pretty accurate.
  3. Thornton Burgess- A favorite author growing up. According to Goodreads I've read 38 of his books.

Top Ten Books I'd Love to see as Movies/TV Shows

Fun topic for Top Ten Tuesday this week!
  1. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien- Now I know what you're thinking.... Lois, this has already been made into movies, good movies too. I agree on both points. However, I think it could be better and I was just thinking recently that I could see The Lord of the Rings being a very good TV show. Thoughts?
  2. The Children of Hurin by J.R.R. Tolkien- I actually don't see potential in The Silmarllion being made into a movie but I think there's a lot of potential for The Children of Hurin to be made into one as it's just one story, it's shorter and it would be pretty cool on screen with a dragon and all! Plus, I love the book. :)
  3. Redwall series by Brian Jacques- I know there was the animated TV series which was meh but I'd love to see a well done TV series done of these books that wasn't really childish.
  4. The Wizard of Oz series by L. Frank Baum- I love the Oz series, I read and re-read those books countless times growing up and I'll be honest... I'm not a big fan of the Judy Garland film... part of it is I'm not a fan of Judy Garland. There are definitely some parts I do like of the film and I do watch it but's it's just not my favorite. I'd love to see a movie or TV series of all the stories that a little more closely follows the books, capturing the quirkiness and fun of the stories.
  5. Life Expectancy by Dean Koontz- There's already been a film version of Koontz's other book Odd Thomas so I think it's time to make another of his books into a film and Life Expectancy is one of my favorites and I think it would be an interesting film. :)
  6. The Binding of the Blades series by L.B. Graham- One of my favorite fantasy series. I think it would be great on screen! :)
  7. Coronation of Glory: The Story of Lady Jane Grey by Deborah Meroff- I love this book and I think it's high time a GOOD movie was made about Lady Jane Grey!
  8. Mansfield Park by Jane Austen- I know there have been three versions made of Mansfield Park so far but none of them are great. They need to make a GREAT one!!!!!
  9. Leave it to Psmith by P.G. Wodehouse- There have been movies or TV series made of many of Wodehouse's other books but not this one yet. This one NEEDS to be made! It is my favorite of his books and I think it would be hilarious on screen!
  10. Armadale by Wilkie Collins- I just read this recently and I think it would be fascinating as a movie. :)
