I've ben keeping a secret from my blog readers. I think though it is time to tell all... especially considering how far things have gone.
Back in April I met a guy.
He liked Tolkien, Doctor Who, reading and theology. Just my kind of guy.
Naturally we started dating. Our favorite dates included going on long walks, watching movies, playing games and debating everything from Tolkien to theology. Most every Sunday he would come and spend time with my family and I.
When he sat through all five hours of Pride and Prejudice with me and then read it... I knew he was the one. When he put up with my craziness, not to mention my family's craziness.... I knew he was the one. When I drug him through fields, rivers and over fences for a "relaxing" walk and he never complained... I knew he was the one. But most of all, when he said "I love you" and asked me to marry him... I knew he was the one.
So yes... we're engaged!!!!! I'm so excited to start this new journey in my life and I would covet your prayers as Brian and I prepare for marriage.
I cannot help but quote Jane Austen from her novel Pride and Prejudice: “I am the happiest creature in the world. Perhaps other people have said so before, but not one with such justice. I am happier even than Jane; she only smiles, I laugh.”
Almost exactly four years ago my grandma had a stroke. Last week she passed away. In a way it was a relief. She has suffered so much since her stroke and it gives me great joy to know she is not suffering anymore. I derive the greatest joy though from knowing that she is with Christ in heaven.
Grandma was an incredible women. She was the third of fifteen children and naturally helped raise the younger ones. She got her teaching degree and went on to teach a couple of years before meeting my grandpa and marrying him. Grandpa and her celebrated sixty years of marriage, had three children and fourteen grandchildren. Shortly after their sixtieth anniversary grandpa passed away. A couple months ago grandma got to rejoice in her first two great-grandchildren. Grandma found her greatest joy in caring for people. Besides faithfully serving her family, Grandma also served her church and community. She taught Sunday school for about fifty years and was involved in the children's ministry at her church in many other ways as well.
Growing up I remember how patient and self-sacrificing she was. When the family was together for a week she would make three full meals a day BY HERSELF for all twenty plus of us. It was only in the last couple years before her stroke that she would let any of us help her and even then only a little.
There's so much more I could say about my grandmother but I would just echo what my uncle said in her eulogy... Not one of us, her husband, children and grandchildren would be where they are today if it hadn't been for her. It is without a doubt that when she passed away God welcomed her into heaven saying "Well done, good and faithful servant."
It's Monday and a New Year! Currently I'm gone skiing in Colorado with the family and some friends. With the road trip I should be reading a fair amount. I love the newness of the new year (yeah that sentence read weird). I feel like I can dive into reading with a fresh perspective and renewed energy. I'm excited to see what reading goals I complete this coming year.
A local used bookstore was having an after Christmas sale so naturally I bought more books. A lot of Wodehouse and some Trollope too! I just love books. :)

Sometimes... Kansas is kind of up in the air when it comes to snow. Sometimes we get white Christmases and sometimes we don't.
Do you get a real tree or a fake tree?
When we were younger we got real trees but when my grandparents downsized they gave us their fake tree and that's we've had ever since. I love real trees though.
What is your favorite Christmas movie?
I love White Christmas so much but I'm also a fan of the classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas with Boris Karloff voicing the grinch.
Where in the world would you like to spend Christmas the most?
With my family.
Which fictional/literary character would you most like to spend Christmas with?
Laura Ingalls Wilder. I loved reading about her Christmases in the Little House books.

I can't chose! I love O Holy Night, Joy to the World, O Come O Come Emmanuel and Let all Mortal Flesh Keep Silence. When it comes to secular Christmas songs I also really like Winter Wonderland.

We've always had multicolored lights on our Christmas tree but I kind of prefer white lights personally.

Back in March I announced that I was going to be an Aunt. No the precious child has not arrived yet but she will be here soon!!! I also announced then that I was going to make her a baptismal/christening gown. That has (finally) arrived! It took me several months because I'm a dreadful procrastinator but it is completed. Knowing how much I procrastinate I made my deadline to have it finished the day of my sister-in-law's baby shower so I wouldn't be finishing it up as she was delivering the baby. Naturally, I finished it the day of her baby shower. I'm excited about how it turned out but it burned me out from crochet for a little while I think. The baby shower was absolutely splendiferous. It had a book theme naturally and I helped organize a mad libs game with classic children's stories that was fun.
Now I'm just eagerly awaiting the birth of my FIRST NIECE!!!! :)))))))

Firsts
Award- I'm not sure. Probably something from 4-H. Sport- Ha! I did gymnastics when I was a kid but never played a sport otherwise except at home. Real Holiday- I think the first memories I have of holidays would be Christmas but the first one I would have experienced would have been Easter. Concert- Well there's a special story for this one but I don't actually remember it as I was just a wee lass but I've just heard it many times. Anyways, the local orchestra was preforming and my family was there and we were sitting in bleachers and I guess me, being the bouncy youngster that I was, was hopping between my dad's legs during it and I managed to fall through the bleachers. I hit the cross bar on the way down and my screams upon hitting the ground stopped the concert. I've been a show stopper ever since. ;) Anyways I survived with just a bump on my head and a great story. :)

Film- Pride and Prejudice (1995) which is technically a miniseries but if I had to chose an actually movie that was a favorite I couldn't! A few of my favorites that I could watch over and over again though are McLintock, Charade, National Treasure and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. TV Show- Doctor Who Color- Blue and all of it's variations Song- Currently I think Celtic Woman's "When You Go". It's addictively catchy. Listen to it!
Restaurant- I don't go out to eat much but I do love Panera. For a real nice restaurant I always loved Macaroni Grill but they got rid of the one close to me some years back. :( Books- Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

Want children? Very much so. But as the old saying goes... First comes love, then comes marriage THEN comes a baby in a baby carriage. Want to be married- Very much so. Careers in mind- Well I am currently a nurse and the only reason I see to ever change that is if I become a wife and mother. I always wanted to be a writer but I don't think that will ever happen. :) Where you want to live- I love where I live. Kansas is a great state. :) Now England, Scotland or Ireland would be lovely too.

So yeah, as you can tell from the title of this post.... I'M GOING TO BE AN AUNT!!!! Remember my brother who married my best friend eBeth last summer? She's pregnant!!! Obviously I'm super duper excited. :) I'm already crocheting a baby blanket (though I'll have to make two so I'll have a girl one and a boy one since they don't know yet). Also I'm planning to crochet a christening gown. There's lots of gorgeous patterns out there so I just have to find one I like that I also have the skill level to make as some of them are incredibly intricate. I'm kind of leaning towards this one pictured on the right (see the pattern HERE). It's supposed to be modeled after Princess Charlotte's christening gown. Decisions, decisions! Thankfully I've got a few months. :)

So I've been out of nursing school for several months now. During nursing school I had basically no social life. I studied and in my spare time I read, watched TV shows or spent time with my family. That's all I really had time for while I was in nursing school. Now that I'm out of nursing school I've realized that I've forgotten how to have a social life. So slowly but surely I've been working on building relationships with friends, purposely taking the time to hang out with people and going to events. For an introvert that isn't always easy but I have actually really enjoyed being able to spend more time with people. Sure I have my patients to talk to but there's a world of difference between talking to my patient while changing their depends and talking with a friend over coffee.... trust me.

Go on my church's mission trip to Costa Rica- I really want to go back to Costa Rica in 2016. I did not go this last year with how busy I was but I would love to go again this next year.
Go on my church's youth mission trip to Nebraska as a chaperone- My little sister is very enthusiastic about me coming so we'll see. I'd have to make sure I had the time available to go on both mission trips.
Since my first post back in 2011 my best friend eBeth has shown up in my posts here and there. What I never told you all, for reasons I'm really not sure... I'm absent minded and easily distracted, and.... where was I? ;) Anyways, what I never told you all was that back last February she and my brother started courting... a match I had been making for years and they had finally come around to realize I was right. ;) Last November for Thanksgiving my brother went up to North Carolina with her to meet some of her extended family and there underneath a waterfall he proposed to her. :)))))))))))))
This last Saturday they were married! Naturally I was one of the bridesmaids and I'm pretty positive that besides them I was the one beaming the most! :) It was an absolutely beautiful ceremony. We were incredibly blessed to have lots of family come.
I am so excited for their marriage and new life together. I love them both so much and I know that they will be very happy together. Finally I can officially call eBeth what I've always called her anyways... my sister. ;)

Yesterday, after two too many years of nursing school ;) I finally graduated from nursing school! It's been a long road and you all, my poor blog readers, have had to hear me moan about it all this time. ;) I'm so thankful to be through it but I am also so thankful for the invaluable education and life lessons I have garnered from it. Next is taking my state boards, aka the fearsome NCLEX! So my moaning isn't over yet. ;)

I know I didn't post last week. All last week I was gone skiing in Colorado with my family. It was an absolute blast though so I'm not sorry one bit. ;) I planned on doing some reading while I was gone, especially a most craved LOTR re-read, but in the end I was so busy I didn't read anything until the way home when I finished the audiobook of Anne of Green Gables and Tolkien's Book of Lost Tales part 2. Also, I turned 21 a couple weeks ago! Check out the details HERE. Tomorrow (Tuesday) school commences. :( Hopefully it won't cut into my wonderful reading time too much.
This past week I celebrated my 21st birthday!
Did I have a first drink? Yes I did! I had a little bit of wine... maybe four ounces and about that much of a light beer as well. Neither were much to my taste but I think I will try some other alcoholic beverages in the future. I was thankful to have that first drink with my family and friends. We also had a chocolate peanut butter cookie dough cake, which was delicious! To top the day off I got a Doctor Who T-shirt and Doctor Who trivial pursuit as well as the book The Valley of Vision, which is a collection of Puritan prayers. I will be making my way through it this year. On my birthday my sister and I began our fifth game of Canasta. We had both won two games and our competitive natures are going into this last game, which determines the winner of the best out of five. Unfortunately she won the fifth game so we have started our sixth and we're going for best out of seven now. I'm determined to win!!!
The family also played a game of Apples to Apples on my birthday, which was fun as always. I didn't win... I rarely do, but it was still quite enjoyable. Apples to Apples is just one of those games that is fun even if you don't win.
All in all it was a great birthday! I still need to get my license renewed but I have a 45 day grace period and there's no way I'll wait until the last moment for that... right? I mean... I don't have a history of waiting until the last moment... do I? ;)
The last couple weeks have been more harrowing then I would have imagined just a month ago. At that time I was freaking out about one more test and then a final and wondering how on earth I was going to survive sanely through the craze. Right before Thanksgiving break though, everything changed. My grandfather, who for many years has struggled with Parkinson's disease, was pronounced unable to swallow after having struggle with swallowing for some time. The family made the decision to put him on Hospice. Almost every day my family and I were there with him at the nursing home. We worked on our school as best we could, watching and waiting. Though he was unresponsive, we talked to him and hugged him, not wanting him to die alone. My last test came on a Friday and afterwards I went as always to his bedside and began studying for my final. I could tell as soon as I came in that his breathing was worse and when the Hospice nurse came in she confirmed my fears. Her guess was that he would not make it through the night. When my grandmother was wheeled in to his bedside she put her hand on his chest as the pastor told him that she was there. My grandpa opened his eyes for the last time. His breathing continued though and those of us that were in there kept talking. A few minutes later it was the pastor that noticed that he had stopped breathing. A nurse confirmed it. My grandfather had went to be with his Savior. The tears came and the work began. As those around me began preparations for the funeral I buried myself in my studies for my final. I was incredibly blessed by those around me who gave me every opportunity to study admit the chaos. One of my nursing school friends let me come over to her house to study so I wouldn't be distracted by the multiplying family members at my house. My cousin took the time to quiz me over countless questions the evening before and the morning of the test... imparting noogies to me when I missed questions. I took the final and came out with an incredible sense of relief that it was over and a fear of the results. It was past though and now I could enjoy being with my family as we celebrated my grandmother's birthday before the visitation for my Grandpa. In-between that time I got me results back for my final... I had done well and I had passed the class! Again I was overwhelmed by God's grace in getting me through the final, and indeed the whole class, despite the many obstacles. At the visitation and the funeral I was reminded of my Grandpa's love and character as I saw so many people show that had been touched by his generous and loving nature. At the funeral, the pastor reminded us all that though Grandpa was a generous, kind, funny and loving, those did not make him a great man and he knew that. Grandpa knew that he was nothing apart from God and it was because of God that he had those incredible qualities and touched so many lives.
I look back now and I am incredibly grateful for my Grandfather and the years I had with him. However, I know that however much I miss him, he does not miss me as he is in heaven with his Savior.
After making my top five list of movies for Five Friday Favorites I was accosted by all that I had forgotten this that and the other movies. Needless to say a more complete list is needed of my my favorite movies. My Dad, who is a movie expert (in his opinion and I suppose in mine as well) insisted on giving his top list too. Our lists are pretty similar but we differ on some points. However both of our lists are similar in that the 1995 miniseries of Pride and Prejudice is our favorite movie. Besides that though, accept for Casablanca definitely being my Dad's second favorite movie, the movies are in no particular order.
These are movies that I would recommend pretty much without reserve. The only movies that I can think of with anything questionable sex wise in them are Groundhog Day,The Gods Must be Crazy and Serenity, and those would also be questionable language wise as well as Signs and Conspiracy Theory, and for violence Serenity, Conspiracy Theory, and Signs, but I would always recommend that you look at the content advisory on IMDB before watching a movie as everyones standards are different. As you can see, modern movies tend to more questionable. :) So here are the ultimate lists of my father and I. :)

Hello all of my dedicated and faithful blog readers. :) I know that I am pretty much only posting once a week at best and if you've been keeping up with my blog you know that is because I have no Wifi during the week. The only posts I have been putting out are the Top Ten Tuesdays and I have just been scheduling those. How is it going with my life though? Well I made it back from Costa Rica on the 21st which was an inspiring and challenging trip. I hope to be able to devote a whole blog post to it sometime in the future but for now I'll just say that I was struck over and over again by God's providence throughout the trip and was amazed at the passion for God's word in the missionaries we were working with. I hope to be able to go back next summer.
The pig farm job is getting better. I am a lot more used to it now and I'm to the point where I guess I could say I enjoy it. Honestly the best part of the day is coming home and watching Doctor Who with my cousins. It is their first time watching it and my second so it's tons of fun to see their reactions. We are in the fifth season right now. :)
I've been keeping up with my reading too. :) I finished Little Dorrit in the airplane and then borrowed and read Heart of Darkness from someone else while in Costa Rica since I didn't have any other books. Since then I've also read The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and re-read The Wind in the Willows. Next I'm planning to read The Book of Lost Tales. I'm also still listening to North and South. I listened to a chapter from it today for the first time in a long time. I also watched the miniseries of Little Dorrit which was great! So hopefully someday you'll get reviews on all of those but for the most part they were all good... especially Little Dorrit and The Wind in the Willows.
So that's what's going on with me. :) I hope you all had a great Independence Day and I'll write again (hopefully) soon! :)
